What Are We Planting?

Recently, I was in Oregon, and while walking to the park with my granddaughters, I noticed a bush off in the distance. I know that probably sounds strange, but it immediately caught my attention. It stood out from everything around it. I found myself staring at it, wondering why it grabbed me so deeply.
It was simply… breathtaking.
Healthy.
Full.
Vibrant.
Rooted.
And honestly, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
As I reflected on it later, I began thinking about life, people, and especially the girls we mentor at Hannah’s House.
Everything we plant grows into something.
Words grow.
Encouragement grows.
Neglect grows too.
So do kindness, consistency, safety, and love.
We live in a world that often wants quick results, but growth rarely works that way. Healthy things are usually grown slowly, through intentional care, nourishment, protection, and time.
That bush didn’t become beautiful overnight.
Something nurtured it.
Something sustained it.
Something kept feeding the roots long before anyone admired what could be seen on the outside.
Isn’t that true for us too?
I think about the girls we work with and how often we focus on visible struggles while forgetting how deeply roots matter. Confidence has roots. Resilience has roots. Emotional health has roots. Feeling safe has roots.
Research talks about Positive Childhood Experiences (PCE’s) and how they help children build resilience and emotional strength that carry into adulthood. Things like having supportive adults, feeling a sense of belonging, shared traditions, encouragement, and safe relationships literally help shape a healthier future.
In many ways, those experiences are seeds.
Every shared meal.
Every ride to group.
Every conversation.
Every craft night.
Every moment a girl feels seen instead of overlooked.
Every time someone listens.
Every time someone says, “You matter.”
Seeds.
Sometimes we underestimate small things because they don’t look dramatic in the moment. But healthy roots are being formed underneath the surface where no one else can see.
And eventually… growth becomes visible.
That’s what struck me about that beautiful orange bush in Oregon. It stood out from far away because something healthy was happening at the root level long before I ever noticed it.
What if we lived more intentionally aware of what we are planting in the lives around us?
Because whether we realize it or not, we are all planting something.
The beautiful part is this:
small seeds, planted consistently with love, can eventually grow into something strong enough to inspire people passing by from a distance.
Maybe even someone like me on the side of an Oregon road.
